Setting Up A Basketball Court

If basketball is your passion but you have no place to play or even to set up a team then you need to find one. If you already have a keen team that simply needs a place to practice recruit all of them to help out. You could turn this into a great community project as a court is something everyone can use and that will give neighbourhood kids a place to play and have fun. An ideal location would be an old warehouse. If you can raise the funds to buy one in your area or get someone to donate it for your cause then all you have to do is convert it into a court. Here’s how you could get started.

Clean up the warehouse

Get your team and any other keen volunteers to help out. Get everyone together on a weekend and let them know that they are all welcome to help whenever they can. Start by emptying the space. Move all furniture and anything else in the warehouse out and either donate or drop it all off at a recycling plant or waste disposal site. Next start sweeping out the space and getting rid of as much dust as possible. You may need to consider sandblasting the space.

Sandblasting in Central Coast might be expensive so see if you can get people to donate towards the cost but is will ensure that the floors are super clean – something that is absolutely important if you are to turn the space into a basketball court. Next get painting. Paint the walls and freshen up the space. You may need to air the place out after as paint fumes can be toxic.

Setting up

Once the place is clean you can get started on converting the space. You will need to measure and draw the court. Make sure that you have space to have team benches, a referees table as well as space for an audience. You may need to build bleachers or set up benches and chairs on elevated platforms. You will also need to have locker rooms set up. These should contain benches and lockers at the very least. You will also need to make sure that there are showers and bathrooms.

Patience is key

This is not an undertaking that will come together overnight or in a few days. It will take weeks, maybe months to get everything ready but it will all be worth it in the end. So work hard at completing it so that you and your team and your neighbourhood have a space to play some ball and have fun!
